When Did IPL Start?

IPL has now entered its 16th edition in the year 2023. It was started in 2008 by BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) under the leadership of then vice-president, Mr. Lalit Modi.

When and where was the first IPL match played?

The first ever IPL match was played on 18th April 2008 between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. KKR batted first and put up a mammoth 222 runs on the board. Their charge was led by Brendon McCullum, who alone scored 158 runs off just 73 balls.

RCB were given a huge task in the first IPL match itself to which they failed miserably. They managed to score only 82 runs, before getting all out in the 15th over. The likes of Ajit Agarkar, Ashok Dinda, and Sourav Ganguly were too much for the RCB attack.

KKR won the match by 140 runs, and McCullum scored IPL’s first-ever century. The match was completely one-sided but has cemented its place in the history books as the inaugural point of what would turn out to be the world’s biggest sporting event.
